Know your key

Blade, chip and remote: the three parts of a car key

Most car keys have up to three working parts. Knowing which one failed tells you what has to be made, and why a key can open the door yet leave the engine silent.

  1. Close view of a laser-cut key blade with a wavy groove down its face

    The blade

This metal part turns the door lock, and the ignition on cars that still have one. Its cuts match your locks: teeth along the edge on most keys, or a wavy groove down the face on laser-cut keys.

    Copies and spare keys
  2. Plain black plastic head of a new chip key, where the transponder sits

    The chip

A transponder, a tiny chip in the head, answers the car each time you start it. If the immobilizer (the car’s anti-theft system) does not recognize that chip, the engine stays off, however well the blade is cut.

  3. Lock, trunk, unlock and panic buttons on a new flip key remote

    The remote

Buttons that lock, unlock and pop the trunk from a distance. The remote is programmed apart from the chip, which is why a fob can still unlock the doors of a car that refuses to start.

    Key fob programming

No key slot, just a start button? That car uses a smart key, which trades the blade for a radio signal the car senses nearby, and most hide a small emergency blade inside for the day the fob battery dies.

Most makes and models, sorted by how their keys work. Some newer vehicles can only be keyed through the dealer’s own security system, so we look up your exact year and model during the call, before the trip.

How a visit works

Car key replacement, start to finish

  1. Call or book

Describe the trouble with the key, the address or cross streets, and the model and year.

  2. Hear the price

We explain the cost on that call, before the service vehicle leaves. Should the job grow once we see the car, say the ignition is worn too, you hear the added cost and we wait for your yes.

  3. Key made beside the car

The service vehicle holds a key cutting machine, blanks and programming equipment. The blade is cut first; after that, its chip and remote get paired to your car.

  4. You test it

Before we pack up, you try the doors, every button and the engine yourself.

Keep a photo ID nearby, with the registration or the title. Ownership gets verified before any door is opened or any blade is cut.

FAQ

Questions people ask first

Short replies here. The longer explanations live in the answers section.

All answers
No working key anywhere: can you still help?

Most vehicles can still get a new key. We cut a blade that fits the locks and teach the car the new chip. On many models we can also unpair the lost keys, so a stranger who picks them up can’t drive off.

How will I know what it costs?

Phone us, describe the vehicle and the problem, and the price comes during that same conversation, while nobody is on the road yet.

How soon can someone come out?

That depends on the car’s location and on the jobs already lined up. When you call, we look at both and tell you when to expect the service vehicle.

What about house or business locks?

Not at all. We work on vehicles only: car keys, fobs, lockouts and ignitions.

Should I buy a key fob online first?

Ask us first. Which fobs a car accepts depends on its exact model and year. Plenty of fobs sold online turn out to be the wrong type for a given car, so we can’t vouch for one bought elsewhere.

Which documents do you check?

Who you are and who owns the car: a photo ID, together with a registration or title showing the owner. If someone else owns the car, call before booking and we’ll explain what is needed.

Kids or pets trapped inside?

Call 911 first, above all when it is hot or freezing outside. Then call us; children and pets inside get priority.

Is the phone answered overnight?

Yes, and on weekends and holidays too. Car Key Experts is open 24/7.
